THE NEW YORK SUN

The New York Sun - a prestigious American newspaper that has been a beacon of informative journalism since 1833. But, as with any institution with such an esteemed history, it's important to keep up with the times. That's why, in 2021, the New York Sun made the bold move to transition to a full-time online publication, ushering its legacy into the digital age.

THE CHALLENGE

Once a beacon of American journalism, The New York Sun faced a daunting challenge in the digital era. Their website, a relic of a bygone era, was slow to load, unresponsive on mobile, and struggling to attract new readers. They needed a fresh, modern approach that would uphold their legacy while embracing the latest in digital technology..

THE OLD DESIGN

THE FINAL RESULT

LET'S DIVE INTO THE PROCESS

The previous website design fell short of modern standards, so we rolled up our sleeves and went back to the drawing board. We generated a  new design that prioritizes clean aesthetics, user-friendly navigation, and mobile responsiveness.

But we didn't stop there. To enhance the user experience even further, we optimized the website's speed by implementing caching techniques and trimming down unnecessary plugins. And because we know that the majority of people read online news on their mobile devices, we made sure that the design remained fully mobile-friendly.

BRAINSTORMING

THE JOURNEY

When it came to generating a new design, we had two options on the table. The first was to play it safe and stick to the same old formula that the rest of the industry leaders were using. The second was to go bold and create an endless stream of content that would appeal to younger generations.

But we wanted to strike a balance between the two. That's where our innovative architectural approach came in. By blending traditional newspaper design with modern content consumption habits, we found the perfect mix of familiarity and novelty.

Our goal was to capture the essence of the NY Sun brand while also providing a cutting-edge digital experience. And we're proud to say that we accomplished just that. The website design is both innovative and accessible, catering to readers of all ages and backgrounds.

SOME KEY HIGHLIGHTS

image

MEDIA LIBRARY DESIGN

We recognize that people's preferences for consuming content have evolved. We've observed that video feeds have gained tremendous traction in the past few years, becoming the preferred medium of information delivery. To cater to this shift, we've taken a forward-thinking approach and introduced a media library page, featuring the same news but in a captivating video format. This allows the audience to keep up with current events even while on the go, without sacrificing the immersive experience that comes with watching video content.

KEEPING USERS INFORMED WITHOUT INTERRUPTIONS

A bottom floating bar on a website is a subtle yet effective way to display important information without interrupting the user's browsing experience. Unlike annoying pop-ups that block content, a floating bar keeps essential information visible at all times.

Subscription calls-to-action or breaking news alerts can be strategically placed on the floating bar, reminding users of the value your website offers without disrupting their flow. Studies show that floating bars have a higher click-through rate than pop-ups, making them a smarter choice for promoting content and encouraging action.

By using a bottom floating bar, we were able to strike a balance between visibility and user experience, ultimately leading to higher engagement and conversions. Plus, with the ability to subscribe via email, Google, or Facebook, it's never been easier for users to stay connected.
